Palawan Conservation Corps

(Practicing Conservation Through Youth empowerment Since 1999)

The PCC is a non-profit NGO (non-government organization) dedicated to the empowerment of Out-of-School Youth from the rural areas of Puerto Princesa City. Every school year, out-of-school youths take part in PCC's 10-month residential program. These youths ages 18-24 years old pass through a rigorous screening process whereby only the most competent among the applicant s are selected. These Corpsmember pay no tuition or fees to various training workshops and supplemental academic education they receive through the program. PCC puts a premium on environmental consciousness, community service & leadership as Corpsmember work as volunteers at the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP).

The PCC trainings are not exclusive to Corpsmembers; the youth from neighboring schools and communities are invited to take part in in the workshop series that the Corpsmembers enjoy. The PCC Campus/Training Site is located at the Rural Agricultural Center, Bgy. Salvacion, Puerto Princesa City. The Campus includes a dormitory, a library, a training site, a farm, a tree nursery, and an organic vegetable garden. The Program's service area includes communities surrounding the PPSRNP, Ulugan Bay, and Honda Bay areas.

The Mission

The Palawan Conservation Corps (PCC) was founded in January 1999 with a mission to empower rural out-of-school youths towards self-sufficiency by developing marketable skills in conservation. At the Rural Agriculture Center, Corpsmembers will engage in hands-on training in organic agriculture, forestry management, and appropriate technology. By working as a team, youth volunteers will develop strong work ethics and leadership qualities while participating in community development efforts.

Organic Agriculture and Farming

The PCC Campus maintains a bio-intensive garden which supplements the daily needs of the PCC Staff and youth. The garden acts as an experimental project to produce vegetables and other plants grown through organic methods. This was the result of a collaborative effort by the PCC and Rural Agriculture Center to improve its crops and enhance the capacity of the community for livelihood alternatives.

Forestry Management

The Tropical Forest Rehabilitation Center is designed to provide Corpsmembers with hands-on skills and experience on plant identification, cultivation and propagation techniques as well as supply seedlings for the Organization's tree planting activities. Wildlings collected from nearby forest areas will be transplanted, propagated and cared for by Corpsmembers at the Rural Agriculture Center as part of PCC's eco-garden and demonstration farm. Also in line with PCC's Adopt-A Tree program, cultivated seedlings will be sold and planted at designated sites to help in the country's reforestation efforts as well as to generate funds to supplement other program activities.

Entrepreneurial Skills Development

The Corpsmembers are encouraged to develop their entrepreneurial skill through  a variety of training programs that PCC provides. These trainings equip each Corpsmember with the capacity to earn a living, which provides a sustainable income that is in line with the conservation efforts of the community. Appropriate rural technology is taught as well as arts and crafts skills developed among the Corpsmembers as they gain hands-on experience in producing, marketing and selling their crafts. Accredited agencies and competent trainers provide sufficient information and training aids to help the Corpsmembers start on their own. Some of the products developed through the trainings are likewise adopted by the PCC as a source of income to support its various projects.
